Zakynthos has very bad air and water quality. Over 10,300 of these wasteland sites are located in Athens, while the rest are spread across other major cities. These sites include illegal dumpsites where people dispose their own refuse as well as those set up by government agencies. Some of them are situated in areas without proper zoning regulations. A majority of such sites have been discovered since 2011. Most of what is found in these illegal land disposal sites is plastic, wood, glass, and paper products. Waste from restaurants and bars can also be disposed of illegally. Even though the authorities often fail to detect such illegal sites, they are often difficult to locate because of their small size and high volume. It is estimated that more than 80 of all land discards go unregistered. Due to these problems, most governments around the world are trying to implement legislation requiring the registration of land reclamation sites. However, this measure may not be effective due to lack of awareness about the problem. Also, it is hard to enforce the law when the only available information about a particular site is contained in a newspaper article or a government agencys website. So, we need new approaches to solve this problem urgently. One approach is to use big data analytics technologies to automatically analyze large sets of raw data generated by a specific type of device. Such technology allows us to identify hidden patterns in large datasets and to extract useful knowledge directly from the data. We will present our research in this paper with an illustration of how the proposed technology is being applied to determine if certain types of hazardous waste are likely to enter a given location.
