Malaga has poor air and water quality.The states environmental agency, the Environment Agency EPA, says the state of Laguna de Oro has been unusually polluted with heavy metals, arsenic, lead and other harmful substances. And the city of Cali, one of the top ten cities in the country for lead emissions, has also been found to have some of its water contaminated by toxic levels of copper.For the first time, a study by Lagos State University LUSU found that the pollution levels in two major coastal towns, Akobo and San Salvador del Monte, have reached dangerously high levels. The study, which was commissioned by LUSUs College of Engineering and Technology, found the levels were even higher than those measured in areas of China and India, where water bodies are being polluted by industrial and mining activities. According to the EPA, more than half of Akobos water supply is being affected by arsenic contamination. There are also high lead levels present in Akobos ground water. As part of ongoing efforts to curb pollution, Lusubased company Olukol will be implementing remediation programmes in both areas. But according to Dr Chukwumi Adeoye, an expert on pollution control at Ojogora Institute of Science and Innovation OISI, it is possible for Lagosa to continue to grow as a coastal city. There is no reason why Lagossans shouldnt be able to survive if they choose to do so, he said. He added that Lagoso could remain the second most populous city in Lagoon East, after Lagonda, due to its proximity to landlocked states such as Kaduna and Benin, while also having a relatively low population density. However, Adeyeye cautioned that any expansion would need to be carefully planned and implemented. In addition, many residents of Ikorodu and Gontoro, who make up the bulk of Alagoan citizens, are opposed to largescale urban development. Adekpo Olaogun, chief of Gondola Ode, another major tourist town in Ikoros, said that he had not seen a large influx of people from the north, particularly Alakija.
