In our records the tapwater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is bad. You can use tapwater to cook, but it is not drinkable. Please use bottled water.
While visiting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria you will notice the water quality is acceptable. The most common problem we experience is the presence of a large quantity of dead and dying algae that have built up in the estuaries, lakes and bays on the island. They can be identified by looking for small black or brown coloured spots floating on top of the surface. You can also see that these spots are usually around the edges of tidal pools as the tide is low at that particular time of year. This is why it is recommended to swim during low tides when there is enough water to allow you to move freely but still keep your wetsuit on. It is possible to find a small amount of clean water with the exception of those areas where there are dead or dying aquatic life. If you do not want to put all your clothes into a swimsuit then you should consider putting your wet suit on before you go swimming. When swimming in shallow water this is fine but if you need to go deeper than 5 m deep then make sure you wear something comfortable. We recommend a wading suit or an opentop waterproof jacket so that you can change quickly without getting wet. Remember to always wear your fins and gloves while swimming they will provide you with extra protection from the cold water. A wadey suit may be necessary because of its ability to absorb body heat more efficiently than any other type of swimwear. There are many other types of suits that are available however they are not very comfortable nor do they provide the same protection against water hazards as wadesuits. The best way to prevent getting soaked is to wear a drysuit which provides excellent protection even in inclement weather. Always carry a water proofing material such as fleece or light nylon clothing. In addition to being able to withstand the harsh environment of your swim location, carrying a baggie of drinking water is also beneficial. Waterproofing is important especially in case of high winds or rough waves. Also remember to carry your own personalised swim gear for example snorkel, mask, swim cap and a whistle. Do not forget to bring a towel and sunscreen. All of these items will help you stay dry!As the weather continues to warm up we are likely to see more people heading out to sea and enjoying the sunshine. However, if conditions are right, you must take care to ensure that your boat is safe and secure whilst you are out on deck.
